Winter Sports Assembly Raises $2380 And 300+ Toys For Beaumont Children’s Hospital

On Friday, December 15, 2023, Detroit Catholic Central High School held a Spirit Day for the Winter Sports Pep Assembly and raised $2380 in donations and between 300 to 400 toys for Beaumont Children’s Hospital.

Spirit Days allow students to wear Catholic Central attire, such as sweatshirts and sweatpants with the CC logo, instead of their daily uniform-approved apparel, if they pay $5. All proceeds are donated to charity.

The pep assembly began with Head Esports Coach, Stephen Juncaj ’18, announcing that the Esports team recently won the state championship tournament for Super Smash Brother’s Ultimate. This is the team’s fifth state championship and propels the excitement of the team’s viral assembly match that earned more than 25 million views on social media and was shared by ESPN.

Also during the pep assembly, each winter sport was announced, including wrestling, basketball, hockey, bowling, skiing, bordercross, and swimming and diving.

Varsity team members were recognized while captains and coaches gave a brief speech to get their teams fired up for the season. Junior Varsity (JV) and Freshman teams were also recognized.

During his first year as Head Basketball Coach, Tory Jackson discussed the family feel at Catholic Central. “It’s only been a year and you’ve made it feel like family. When one guy is down, the next is there to help out. They push each other and it’s contagious,” Tory stated.

The assembly concluded with Athletic Director, Aaron Babicz ’93, hyping up the student body by reminding them to audit their circle. “If your circle doesn’t pick you up when you feel down, audit your circle. You control your life. Surround yourself with people who make you great. Here at CC, we’ve created a culture of love. This whole school is one giant circle.”
