Varsity Wrestling Celebrates Fourth Consecutive Division 1 State Championship

On Monday, March 2, 2026, Catholic Central High School hosted a school-wide assembly to celebrate the Varsity Wrestling Team’s fourth consecutive MHSAA Division 1 Team Wrestling State Championship title.

The Shamrocks earned the title on February 28, 2026, defeating Hartland High School 43-16.

The victory marked Catholic Central’s fourth straight Division 1 state championship — a remarkable “four-peat” — and further cemented the program’s legacy as one of the premier wrestling dynasties in Michigan.

The 2026 title is the 19th overall team state championship in program history and the 12th under Head Coach Mitch Hancock ‘00. All 12 of those championships have come since 2010. This also marks the second time the Shamrocks have captured four consecutive state titles, previously accomplishing the feat from 2017 through 2020.

During Monday’s celebration, Head Varsity Coach Mitch Hancock ‘00 addressed the student body, reflecting on the team’s commitment, discipline, and championship mindset.

He also announced his official retirement as Head Varsity Wrestling Coach after 20 years, as he prepares to step into his new role as Principal of Catholic Central for the 2026–2027 school year.

Coach Hancock’s leadership has defined an era of excellence for Catholic Central Wrestling. His career accomplishments include:

  • Assistant Coach for one season (2007)
  • Head Coach for 19 seasons (2008–2026)
  • 425-68 overall dual meet record
  • 19 CHSL Championships
  • 19 District Championships
  • 18 Regional Championships
  • 12 State Championships
  • 3 State Runner-Up finishes
  • 73 Individual State Championships (with 2026 still pending)

Catholic Central congratulates Coach Hancock on his successful tenure as Head Varsity Wrestling Coach and wishes him well as he steps into his new role as the first lay Principal of Catholic Central for the 2026–2027 school year.
