Three Students Receive Award of Merit For Spectrum Newspaper

On May 2, 2024, the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA) presented three members of the Spectrum Newspaper - Dominic Apap ‘24, Oliver Kammeraad ‘24, and David Kibbey ‘24 - with an Award of Merit for their excellent work during the 2023-2024 school year.

The MIPA, housed in the Michigan State University School of Journalism, is a nonprofit organization composed of teachers and advisors who are committed to promoting and recognizing journalism at all levels.

The Spectrum is a student-run print newspaper published four times per year. The first issue was published by students in 1936 and it has remained an important part of the school’s tradition since. Students who write for the Spectrum cover stories such as school news, sports, editorials, interviews, and feature stories. The team is moderated by English Teacher, Nieko Ianni ‘07.

“It was a true honor to receive the award along with two of my great friends. The Spectrum Team works hard each quarter to put a paper together that reflects that of what could be done by professionals. It was a pleasure to work alongside Mr. Nieko Ianni and the team for two years,” stated David Kibbey ‘24.

The award recognized the team with an Honorable Mention for a feature or page spread within the MIPA Individual Category Contest under the Division 3, News Design, Info Graphics and Art category for their “Back to the Future” article.

The article discussed the construction of the school’s new George and Mary Turek Hall of Science building, which features a flight simulator lab, a Blue Angel jet suspended from the ceiling, a Robotics arena, immersive theater, and much more.
