Students Collect 4,400 Canned Foods and $6,608 During Annual Food Drive

Shamrocks collected 4,400 canned foods and raised $6,608 in donations during the Student Activities Department’s annual canned food drive.

Each year, the Student Activities Department hosts a canned food drive during the first week of November. All food items and some of the money collected are taken to Loaves and Fishes of Southwest Detroit (LFSD), a non-profit that assists with feeding local residents.

Catholic Central partnered with LFSD in 2008 for its annual food drive and the partnership has continued every year since. On April 18, 2023, LFSD awarded Catholic Central with its Diamond Food Donor Award for the student’s continued support in helping the non-profit break the cycle of hunger.

The rest of the money collected will be donated to Grace Centers of Hope, one of the largest non-profit, Christian organizations providing long-term, faith-based life skills programs for individuals affected by abuse, chemical dependency, and homelessness in Southeast Michigan.

“Throughout the week, we collected almost 4,400 food items and $6,608, including $2,581 from Spirit Day on November 3. That was only 90% of our school quota (10 items or dollars per student), but still an amazing collection. We will load the truck next week Friday and deliver the food Friday afternoon,” stated Mike Carrier ‘06, Director of Student Activities.

Last year, students collected 5,000 canned food items and raised $4,032 with donations going to Loaves and Fishes of Southwest Detroit and Grace Centers of Hope, respectively.

"At Catholic Central, we teach our students the importance of recognizing the blessings we have and the responsibility we share to serve the community by giving to those who are less fortunate. The Canned Food Drive is a great example of how the CC Family strives to put into action the values of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge to give back to the greater community. We are so proud of our young men, and we know they will continue to be servant leaders in a world that is so desperate for them," stated Mr. Carrier.
