Spectrum Earns Recognition at 2025 MIPA Awards

Several Catholic Central students were recognized for their work on The Spectrum in the 2025 Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA) Awards, earning top honors in categories ranging from design and writing to photography.

The Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA), based in the School of Journalism at Michigan State University, is a nonprofit organization made up of educators dedicated to supporting and celebrating student journalism across all levels.

The Spectrum is a student-produced print newspaper released four times each year. Since its debut in 1936, it has remained a valued part of the school’s tradition. Student journalists cover a wide range of topics, including school news, sports, opinion pieces, interviews, and feature stories. The publication is overseen by English Teacher Nieko Ianni ‘07.

First Place Awards

  • Ben Towne ‘25 and Connor Foumia ‘25 received First Place in the Feature Page or Spread category for their work on Volume 88, No. 2, Pages 4–5.
  • Zaven Shoushanian ‘26 earned First Place in Sports Action Photo for his image titled Lee Krueger ‘25 puts three more points on the board.
  • Winston Dietz ‘26 received First Place in News-Feature Photo for his photo of Owen Young ‘25 practicing to fly the school’s new jet.

Second and Third Place Awards

  • Ben Towne ‘25 and Christian Bakkal ‘25 received Second Place for Front Page – Newspaper Style (Volume 88, No. 2, Page 1).
  • Stuart Kammeraad ‘27 earned Third Place in the Information Graphic category for his visual breakdown of Shamrock Shuffle totals over the last 10 years.
