As the world turns its attention toward Paris for the Olympic Games, one name that rings a bell with pride and anticipation for the Catholic Central and Michigan wrestling community is Myles Amine ‘15.
A standout athlete with a remarkable journey, Myles is set to represent San Marino, a small yet passionate nation. The Amine family has dual citizenship as Myles’ grandparents Dick and Patricia immigrated to the United States from San Marino.
Myles' mother, Marcy Mularoni Amine, a Mercy graduate, passed down her Sammarinese lineage to her family, including sons Myles Amine ‘15 and Malik Amine ‘14, who have been competing for San Marino on the international level over the last decade. The Mularoni family is a legacy family at CC with graduates from several different decades.
The excitement surrounding his participation is notable, especially among those who have followed his impressive career trajectory from high school to international stardom.
Myles is a proud Detroit Catholic Central class graduate of ‘15, where he forged his early wrestling legacy alongside his older brother, Malik ‘14. Myles has consistently demonstrated an incredible commitment to his sport with his brother every step of the way.
At Catholic Central, Malik and Myles secured two state individual championships along with three MHSAA Team State titles ('12,’13, and ’14), laying the foundation for a distinguished career that would soon take Myles to the national stage.
His transition to collegiate wrestling at the University of Michigan marked a new chapter of success. During his time as a Wolverine, Myles notched himself as one of the all-time great Wolverines, reaching the Big 10 Finals four times, while winning the Big Ten Championship in ‘21 and ‘22, and helping Michigan win the Big Ten Team Championship in 2022.
The pinnacle of Myles’ career to date came during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where he captured a bronze medal in the 86 kg weight class.
His victory over Deepak Punia from Indiana was a defining moment as he scored in the last few seconds to claim bronze. More recently, Myles earned Gold at the Euro Championships in 2022 and Bronze at the World Championships in 2023.
Team Amine runs deep, with his grandfather, Nazim Amine, also having made his mark in the sport claiming bronze in the 1960 Olympics for Lebanon. Myles’ father, Mike, and uncle, Sam, wrestled at the University of Michigan in the late 1980’s.
Mike earned NCAA runner-up honors in 1988, while his cousin, Cameron, earned All-American honors three times at Michigan, exemplifying the athletic excellence that runs in the Amine family. This legacy and family tradition in the sport of wrestling continues to inspire Myles as he prepares for the Paris Games.
Amine will enter Paris as the #3 seed at 86 kg that is set to start on August 8. “Myles is chasing Gold, make no qualms about it,” said Catholic Central Head Wrestling Coach Mitch Hancock.
“Myles is confident in his training and always leaves it on the mat when competing. We’re all very excited for him, we’re praying for him, and we recognize he’ll leave his very best on the mat in Paris,” Coach Hancock continued.
As the Games approach, all eyes will be on Myles as he seeks to add another chapter to his remarkable story and bring honor to San Marino and Team Amine on the Olympic stage. Follow Myles on his Olympic journey on his various social media platforms @MylesAmine.
