OCIA Program Welcomes Largest Group of Students to Date

Catholic Central’s OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation for Adults) program continues to grow in remarkable ways, reflecting a deepening interest in faith formation among our students. This year, 31 students have enrolled - our largest group to date.

The growth follows a significant increase in inquiries. Theology faculty interviewed 42 students this fall, compared to 23 last school year, ultimately welcoming 28 into the program while thoughtfully guiding others to continue discerning their next steps.

Some students were encouraged to participate in programs at their home parishes, particularly those already active in their parish communities and preparing for Confirmation at the typical age.

Theology Teachers Rebecca Joseph and Colin Whitehead ‘13 meet with students biweekly in the Learning Commons - upperclassmen during period 4 and underclassmen during period 5 - providing formation, fellowship, and pastoral support throughout the year. The program will celebrate the Rite of Acceptance and Welcome at an upcoming school Mass in early December.

Rebecca Joseph, who co-leads the program along with Colin Whitehead ‘13, reflected on the meaningful momentum behind this year’s interest:

“At CC, we’re building a culture of conversion. Students are hearing the truth about Jesus Christ and witnessing their friends being transformed by an encounter with Christ, and that inspires others. The movement of the Spirit continues to build a fellowship of believers in the school community. Indeed, we’ve been hearing about young men coming into the Church all over the country. God is renewing His people through these young men who will bring the Light of Christ to our society.” — Rebecca Joseph

Rebecca shared that many students enter the process after moments of personal reflection and sincere questioning:

“What are my priorities? What will happen when we die? How do I want to live my life? What is the truth? They are synthesizing all they’ve learned in their classes and in their own faith experiences and making a decision to follow Christ. Truth, beauty, the Mass, and fellowship have been factors in choosing the Catholic Church. It is beautiful to see how the young men in the school are supporting one another on their faith journey and are becoming mentors for each other.” — Rebecca Joseph

We extend our gratitude to our Theology Department, our campus ministry and pastoral staff, and all faculty and coaches who walk with students daily in faith and character formation, and we wish this year’s OCIA students the best of luck as they move forward in their faith journey!
