Over the weekend of March 15, 2025, Catholic Central’s Model UN team traveled to East Lansing to compete in a conference debating global issues.
Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation of a UN General Assembly where teams from different schools represent assigned countries. Participants research their country’s stance on a given topic, deliver speeches, engage in debates, and collaborate in alliances to draft resolutions that address global issues.
“The tournament went off without a hitch. The boys had a great time and were really challenged. We were one of the top small delegation teams, according to the MSUMUN Organizers. They represented Catholic Central with tenacity and honor,” stated Club Moderator and Social Studies Teacher, Russell Facione.
Aaron Fields ‘25, Benjamin Garcia McKinley '28, Peter Sanin ‘25, Jeremiah Cameron '28, and Nathaniel Denk '27 represented CC at the event. Delegates took on the roles of diplomats from nations such as Sudan and Saudi Arabia, working to address global challenges, including access to clean drinking water in Northeast Africa, child labor, and climate change.
Beyond traditional international issues, delegates tackled the 2010 Revolution in Kyrgyzstan, navigating the political unrest of the time, and engaged in a debate over a potential labor strike at Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory - a fictional crisis that unfolded after Charlie took over the company and faced lawsuits from the other golden ticket winners.
“While there were no formal awards, every resolution they co-wrote passed in their committees. We've never had so many co-authors on committee resolutions before, which was very exciting. As we wind down the season, we're looking ahead to selecting officers for the 2025-26 school year and planning our second annual CC MUN Summer Camp,” shared Mr. Facione.
