Catholic Central High School is proud to announce Matthew Haarala ’25 as this year’s recipient of the Fr. Richard A. Ranalletti Award for Outstanding Christian Character. The award, presented annually at graduation, honors a senior who has exemplified Christian character and values throughout his time at Catholic Central.
"Matthew Haarala is an excellent choice for the Fr. Ranalletti Award. He was the rector of our fall Kairos Retreat, and very active in helping others to grow in their faith because of his own witness. Furthermore, Matthew was very involved in volunteering within our school community by providing leadership in a number of events. He also was extremely involved in our local community, serving over 200 hours of volunteer work. Matthew’s humble leadership and the selfless gift of his time, make him a wonderful choice for the Fr. Richard Ranalletti Award," stated Kevin Walters, Director of Campus Ministry.
Established in 2016, the Ranalletti Award pays tribute to Rev. Richard A. Ranalletti, CSB, who served as Catholic Central’s 18th principal from 2000 to 2010 and its second president from 2010 to 2012. Rev. Ranalletti was a dedicated Basilian educator known for his strong faith, compassionate leadership, and commitment to the spiritual development of students.
The honor is especially meaningful as it reflects the voice of the student body. Students are nominated by peers and selected by a faculty committee.
Matthew was recognized by classmates and faculty for his integrity, humility, and commitment to his faith. Whether serving others, leading by example, or offering a quiet word of encouragement, Matthew has consistently demonstrated what it means to be a man of character in the Basilian tradition.
“Matthew embodies the spirit of Catholic Central,” said Principal Fr. Patrick Fulton, CSB. “His actions speak louder than words. He’s someone others look to for guidance, not because he seeks attention, but because of the way he treats others, with genuine respect and compassion.”
Matthew’s leadership has been felt across campus, both in and out of the classroom. From participating in Campus Ministry activities to mentoring younger students and contributing to service projects, he has shown a selfless dedication to the Catholic values that define the CC experience.
As the 2025 Ranalletti Award recipient, Matthew joins a distinguished group of alumni who have carried the light of Christ into their communities and beyond.
Congratulations, Matthew, and thank you for being a living example of the Basilian motto: “Teach Me Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.”
