On Tuesday, October 15, 2024, Kenton Mack spoke to students about empathy, the college experience, Corporate America, and how to respond in certain social situations.
“We talked about empathy not just being a concept. It’s not just something we read about, but also need to put into practice. Within the speech, I challenged students to practice being empathic towards one another, towards a hypothetical scenario, and ultimately toward an experience in mind in real time,” Mack explained.
Mack, a public speaker, former college basketball player, Medical Sales Representative for Abbott Laboratories, non-profit founder, and business owner, spoke about identity and emotional intelligence at Catholic Central last year.
This year’s visit was a follow-up to that talk, building on the concepts of emotional intelligence and the importance of understanding how to interact with peers from different backgrounds.
During his presentation, he talked about the differences between empathetic and sympathetic responses and how these can best be applied during everyday interactions among students at CC.
He then gave the students two scenarios and asked them to spread out in the gym, talk amongst themselves and work together to determine the best way to handle the situation using what they just learned about empathy versus sympathy.
Chris Okoye ‘14, Director of Diversity, Student Engagement, and Community Outreach, shared, “One of the things Kenton always talks about is fulfilling your role. Regardless of if the shoe fits, at least try to put it on. Meaning if your brother is going through something, take the time to see how he feels. Don’t assume, judge, or not acknowledge it. Say, ‘How are you feeling? I may not look like you. I may not have what you have or believe what you believe, but you are my brother and I do love you. How can I better help and serve you?’”
Mack is the founder of Athletes Igniting Action, an organization dedicated to empowering athletes with the tools to speak out against social and racial injustices. He established the organization in 2020 with two former basketball teammates from Northern Michigan after they engaged in discussions about fostering change within their classes, games, and practices.
While the organization primarily targets athletes, Mack envisions expanding its reach to individuals beyond the athletic community. His action talks aim to inspire people to find their voices and become the change they wish to see in the world.
