Journey of Flight Students Launch Hot Air Balloons

Students in Mrs. Amy Ely's Aviation: Journey of Flight class put their designs to the test on Wednesday, Sept. 23, by launching hot-air balloons they built in class and timing how long each one stayed in the air.

The project let students apply concepts they've been studying, including lift, air density, weight, and stability. After completing their balloons, students launched them indoors and tracked each flight, comparing results to see which designs achieved the longest flight times.

Activities like this are a key part of Catholic Central's aviation program, where students learn by doing. Rather than simply reading about the principles of flight, students are challenged to design, build, test, and refine their ideas through hands-on projects.

The balloon launches sparked plenty of friendly competition and gave students a firsthand look at how small design changes can affect performance. More importantly, the activity helped connect classroom lessons to real-world aviation and engineering concepts while making learning both engaging and memorable.
