Father Dennis Noelke, CSB '71 Shares Special Thanksgiving Reflection

In Luke 17:11-19, we hear one of the many healing stories. This story finds Jesus healing 10 lepers. It has a unique feature. It is the one story in which someone who has experienced the mercy of God in his or her life through the words or action of Jesus returns and says “thank you.”

When I read that story, I ask the same question which Jesus asked, “Where are the other nine?” Where did they go? I don’t know what answer Jesus arrived at. My conclusion was that the other nine had no awareness of what had occurred in their life and if they had, they were so intent on returning home they did not see a need to say “thank you.”

The words “thank you” are two small but terribly important words. They are two words that should be on our lips constantly. We have so much for which to be thankful, yet I think that because we have been blessed with so much, these very blessings block our recognition of them and ultimately of God’s abundant kindness to us.

I want to offer a suggestion that may help you develop an awareness of your many blessings. For one week, today until Thanksgiving Day, I invite you to take one action when you have an awareness of God’s blessings in your life. Perhaps you say, “thank you, Lord,” or have a piece of paper and write down that blessing and on Thanksgiving, place that paper next to the turkey and stuffing on the Thanksgiving table.

Be aware of all you have received and be aware of the one who is the source of these blessings. GIVE THANKS.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise God all creatures here below;

Praise God above you heavenly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
