Emergency Room Ultrasound DRIVE Development Day Provides Hands-On Learning Opportunity

Catholic Central students had the opportunity to explore real-world applications of emergency medicine during the Emergency Room Ultrasound DRIVE Development Day, held on Friday, May 9, 2025, in the Learning Commons.

Dr. Nicholas Dyc, Medical Director of IEP Urgent Care, visited campus to lead a session on bedside ultrasonography, an increasingly common diagnostic and therapeutic tool used in urgent and emergency care settings. He brought an ultrasound machine and performed live demonstrations on students, allowing them to observe internal organs such as the heart, lungs, and kidneys.

The workshop introduced students to the practical use of ultrasound in diagnosing conditions such as aortic aneurysms, internal bleeding following trauma, and heart complications that may require immediate intervention. Dr. Dyc also explained how ultrasound can be used to guide procedures like administering anesthesia or managing joint injuries and lacerations.

Students received an overview of ultrasound basics, including some introductory physics concepts and proper probe-handling techniques. They also had the opportunity to try the equipment themselves under supervision, with live images projected for the group to observe and discuss.
