Dave Wilson Receives State and National Coach of the Year Recognition

Catholic Central Social Studies teacher and Head Varsity Lacrosse Coach Dave Wilson was recently honored as Coach of the Year by both the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) and the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). The prestigious award recognizes “outstanding service and unselfish devotion to interscholastic activities,” underscoring Coach Wilson’s unwavering commitment to Catholic Central student-athletes and the continued excellence of the lacrosse program.

During Coach Wilson’s tenure of more than 20 years at Catholic Central, he has accumulated nearly 300 career victories. Most recently, his program was recognized with the Michigan High School Lacrosse Officials Association Sportsmanship Award, further reflecting the values of respect, integrity, and leadership that define his teams. This latest honor marks the eighth major coaching award of his career, adding to his inductions into the Coaches Hall of Fame and the Catholic League Hall of Fame. A Catholic Central alumnus, Wilson credits his time as a student at CC with shaping his coaching philosophy and approach to leadership. “Being Basilian built really helps in the trenches and in daily life interacting with our students,” Wilson said. “This is truly a calling for me to be at my alma mater.”

Catholic Central’s lacrosse program also celebrated additional recognition this week, as assistant coach Stan Zajdel ’88 was inducted into the Michigan High School Lacrosse Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Zajdel and Wilson have shared a lifelong connection, having been classmates in both grade school and high school, and now continue their partnership on the sidelines at their alma mater. Reflecting on Zajdel’s induction, Wilson said, “I couldn’t be happier for Stan. He’s a great man and father, and has been a significant force in Michigan high school lacrosse.” His induction honors his lasting impact on the sport and dedication to the Shamrock lacrosse community.

Congratulations to Coach Wilson and Coach Zajdel on these well-deserved honors and their outstanding contributions to Catholic Central athletics.
