On February 20, 2025, legendary Coach Mike Rodriguez made a special visit to Detroit Catholic Central to speak with the wrestling team ahead of their state tournament.
Coach Rod, who coached at CC for nearly 50 years, played a huge role in building the school’s wrestling program. He led the team to 8 state championships and coached many state champions along the way. A standout wrestler himself, Coach Rod was a 3-time Big Ten Champion and a 2-time NCAA finalist at the University of Michigan.
After a successful career in wrestling, including being an Olympic alternate and winning an AAU National Championship, Coach Rod turned to coaching at CC. He quickly transformed the program, winning 3 straight state titles in the early '70s and eventually accumulating over 700 dual meet wins, making him one of the most successful high school wrestling coaches in history.
He also coached 29 state champions and numerous All-Americans, and was the Head Golf Coach at Catholic Central from 1968 to 1976, winning 2 Catholic League and 3 Regional Championships
Throughout his career, Coach Rod's impact extended beyond wrestling, as he became a mentor, role model, and spiritual guide for countless young athletes. His family, including his sons who also wrestled at CC, remain involved in the program.
He remains involved with CC as a spiritual moderator. During his visit, many alumni gathered to hear his inspiring words, sharing their fond memories of wrestling under his leadership.
The CC wrestling family remains forever grateful for his dedication and guidance!
