NOVI, MICH. – May 11, 2022 – Detroit Catholic Central High School announced today three alumni will be inducted into the Catholic High School League (CHSL) Hall of Fame during the organization’s 2022 Annual Hall of Fame Day on June 13.
Myles Amine ’15 and James Piot ‘17 will be recognized for their outstanding performances in wrestling and golf, respectively. Mitch Hancock ’00 will be inducted into the Catholic Coaches Association Hall of Fame for his leadership and championship-level program as wrestling coach for Catholic Central over the last 15 years.
“Proud is an understatement,” said Athletic Director Aaron Babicz. “Few are lucky enough to know and guide athletes such as these men. Their leadership and commitment to growth is inspiring to watch. The standards they set for themselves, and their teams has caused ripple effects of success for our athletic programs over the years. Each of them has left their mark at Catholic Central and I am honored to stand by these men in the CHSL Hall of Fame.”
During his time at Catholic Central, Myles Amine ‘15 captured back-to-back Michigan state titles, winning at 160 pounds (2015) and 140 pounds (2014); he is a three-time state place winner, also claiming third place at 130 pounds (2013) as well as a three-time Team State Champion. Since graduating from Catholic Central, Amine wrestled for the University of Michigan earning his spot as a five-time NCAA All-American. This past summer, he won a bronze medal for wrestling at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo representing San Marino.
"Myles has set a standard of persistent work and leading by example since he put on his first pair of wrestling headgear which is why he finds himself as a five-time All-American and Olympic bronze medalist,” said Babicz.
“He is an example of what it takes to be a champion on and off of the mat and continues to give back to the CC family with his time and talents.”
Before joining Michigan State University’s Golf Team, James Piot ’17 made a name for himself in the sport early on. Among many accolades, Piot helped lead Catholic Central to three consecutive Division 1 Michigan High School Championships (2015-17), was named a four-time Michigan High School Golf Super Team selection and won the 2016 and 2017 Michigan Junior PGA Championship. At Michigan State, he produced the lowest single-season, scoring average in program history at 71.33 and most recently, won the 121st U.S. Amateur Open Championship, which earned him a spot in The Masters, golf’s most revered tournament.
“The smile you see on the course says it all for this young man,” said Babicz. “James has always carried himself with a sense of confidence that shines through in his game and personality. His appearance in the Masters, after winning the US Amateur Open Championship, will be talked about for years to come here at CC, that is until he wins his first Masters!”
While studying at Central Michigan University, Hancock earned Division I NCAA All-American honors as a senior and was named “Most Outstanding Wrestler” in the program. Before returning to Catholic Central, Hancock spent one season as an assistant coach at CMU and helped lead the team to a MAC championship and Top 15 Team finish in the NCAA. He joined the teaching staff at Catholic Central in 2006 and became Dean of Students in 2015. He has coached 15 seasons of varsity wrestling at Catholic Central where he has led the team to win eight MHSAA D1 State Championships, 14 Regional Championships, and 15 District Championships. Under his coaching and guidance, 58 Catholic Central students earned individual state MHSAA championship titles.
“Mitch is one of the finest leaders to coach the sport of wrestling on any level. His love for the kids and their growth as young men of faith is why our program is so successful. He commits himself to every aspect of their lives in helping them so they can be greater than they ever thought possible,” said Babicz.
Catholic Central is a proud member of the CHSL where it celebrates more than 40 Hall of Fame athletes and coaches since 1976 with four current Hall of Fame coaches serving the school’s athletic program and five current school administrators.
