CC Student Organizes Charity Hockey Game for Whaley Children’s Center

On Saturday, September 23, the Detroit Red Wings Alumni will face off against the Detroit Catholic Central Alumni in a charity hockey game to raise funds for the Whaley Children’s Center. The event has been organized by CC senior Matthew Kuzner, class of '24.

“I wanted to do something extra meaningful for my service hours this year and make a significant difference in someone’s life. I thought it would be fun to combine my passion for hockey and provide an enjoyable experience for all participants,” said Kuzner.

The Whaley Children’s Center is a local nonprofit located in Flint, MI, dedicated to offering essential support, care, and love to at-risk foster children.

“The Children’s Center provides care, education, and shelter to nearly 90 children each year who are survivors of the most horrific abuse and neglect,” added Kuzner. “I chose the Children’s Center as the beneficiary for the event because I've been blessed with a loving family, and I want to do my best to help these kids experience the same love and care that I have received.”

Catholic Central held a spirit day on Friday, September 15, where students donated a total of $3,073 for Kuzner’s charity game.

Catholic Central’s own Varsity Head Coach, Brandon Kalenieki ’00 will be one of the CC Hockey Alumni skating in the game against former Red Wings.

“It's exciting, it should be a lot of fun. I know Matthew put a lot of work into organizing this event and we are honored to have the opportunity to play for such a special cause,” said Kaleniecki.

The charity hockey game is scheduled to start at 6:00 PM on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at the Novi Ice Arena. Tickets are still available for purchase at www.4thekidz.net.
