On Thursday, April 10, 2025, Catholic Central announced Jaden Pydyn ‘25 as this year’s Whelan Award winner during a school-wide Spring Sports Assembly.
Each year, the Fr. James H. Whelan Award is presented to a senior who stands out not only for strong academics and athletic ability, but also for being recognized by his classmates as a true Christian gentleman.
The award was first introduced in 1950 in honor of Rev. James H. Whelan, CSB, who served as Catholic Central’s fourth principal from 1934 to 1940. For more than 60 years, it has recognized young men who’ve made their mark at CC and continue to carry those values with them long after graduation.
Pydyn was announced as the Whelan Award winner at the conclusion of the Spring Sports Assembly, receiving recognition from the entire student body. What makes the Whelan Award especially meaningful is that it's voted on by the students themselves.
During the assembly, coaches and team captains from our spring athletics programs shared updates, season highlights, and goals for the weeks ahead.
Teams featured included baseball, golf, rugby, lacrosse, track and field, esports, and volleyball. Each group spoke about their hard work so far this season and encouraged fellow students to support them at upcoming games and meets or even consider joining a team.
