Catholic Central Welcomes Summer Interns Across Campus

This summer, Catholic Central welcomed a group of interns and summer workers who supported departments across campus and gained hands-on experience in their fields of interest.

More than 20 student maintenance workers worked under the guidance of Kevin Kotzian, Director of Facilities and Transportation. Their efforts helped prepare the school building and grounds for the upcoming school year and ensured that regular summer operations continued smoothly.

The Advancement Office hosted two Data Analytics interns: Luke Martin ’23 and Oliver Kammeraad ’24, both students at the University of Michigan, working under Brendan Bebb ’19, Director of Analytics. Their work focused on collecting, cleaning, and analyzing alumni data, as well as building visualizations to help the Advancement team better understand trends and engagement.

“I’m interning with Brendan Bebb ’19, the Director of Analytics for the Advancement Office,” said Kammeraad. “Luke and I spend a lot of our time collecting and organizing data on alumni. The rest of our time is spent working with databases of alumni information, where we clean and evaluate data. The work here has built directly off what I learned in data science classes at college.”

Kammeraad noted that the experience gave him a clearer picture of what a future in data science could look like. “I wasn’t sure how a major in Data Science would look as a job. This internship has given me real-world exposure and allowed me to apply skills I’ve learned in class. I also didn’t realize how much work goes into fundraising for the school. I always assumed CC had endless resources, but I now see the amount of behind-the-scenes effort it takes to keep everything running.”

Martin said that one of the most valuable parts of the internship was learning to use Python to visualize the data they cleaned. “What I’ve enjoyed most is visualizing the alumni data. It really makes the data cleaning worth it, and I’ve learned a lot by using Python, which I had limited experience with before working here.”

He also spoke about the broader impact of their work. “Oliver and I clean and update alumni data, and we talk with Brendan about what that means for the office and the school. This experience has helped clarify what kind of work I might want to do after graduation.”

Reflecting on the experience, Martin said, “I barely knew anything about the Advancement Office before. Now, I see how much effort goes into keeping the community connected and supporting the school financially. Brendan has been a great mentor; professional but easy to talk to. He’s shown me what a healthy working relationship should look like.”

He encouraged future interns to stay open to learning: “Working here, I’ve continued to benefit from the CC community, even after graduation. You become part of the effort to create opportunities for others, just like others did for us.”

In the Communications Department, Dominic Recchione ’26 and Peter Dombkowski ’26 worked under Shaun Sova ’09, Director of Communications. Their projects included supporting content for the website and social media and assisting with writing and photography. Both gained early experience in digital communication and learned more about the work that goes into promoting school news and events.

“During my time here, I’ve improved a lot in project planning, fast-paced editing, and communicating with different departments. It’s also helped me sharpen my storytelling and on-the-fly problem-solving skills. This internship has given me more clarity on where I want to go with my career. I want to keep pursuing media production, especially in sports and school environments where I can capture real, impactful moments. After this internship, I’m continuing to grow my media brand, take on client work, and stay involved with Catholic Central throughout the school year. This experience has definitely pushed me forward,” Dominic stated.

Jayne Burke, daughter of Tim Burke ’86, spent the summer as an intern in the Business Office, working with Brittany Mackenzie on a variety of projects, including parking assignments and school store preparation.

“As an intern in the Business Office, I’ve had the opportunity to support projects like parking assignments, early prep for the school store, and general office organization,” Burke said. “It’s been rewarding to observe daily operations behind the scenes and connect what I’m learning at school with real-world tasks.”

Burke is studying Accounting at John Carroll University and said her time at CC gave her insight into potential future career paths. “This experience helped me think more seriously about working in a school or nonprofit setting. I’m especially thankful to Mrs. Mackenzie, Mrs. Wegienka, Ms. Todd, and Mrs. Ganss for being so welcoming and supportive.”

Catholic Central is grateful to all of this year’s interns and summer workers for their contributions to campus operations!
