The Catholic Central community celebrates the life of Mr. Alan Barker, our longest-serving faculty member, who passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 27, 2026.

For 42 years, Mr. Barker faithfully served generations of Shamrocks as a teacher, counselor, mentor, and trusted colleague. His impact on Catholic Central extended far beyond the walls of his office, touching the lives of thousands of students and families who benefited from his guidance, wisdom, humor, and unwavering commitment to the school community.

Most recently, he served as counselor to the Class of 2026, including Jeremiah Furtado '26, who made school history this spring by becoming the first student ever to win two of Catholic Central's Big Three awards in the same year. Jeremiah received both the Fr. John R. Ranalletti Award and the Fr. Richard Elmer Dillon Award, a milestone achievement that reflected the success of a class Alan helped guide throughout their high school journey.

As Dean of the Faculty, Mr. Barker was the longest-tenured employee at Catholic Central. Colleagues often looked to him not only for his institutional knowledge and countless stories from the school's history but also for his willingness to help wherever needed. Whether assisting a student with an academic concern, supporting a fellow faculty member, or volunteering for an event, Alan approached every task with humility, dedication, and a genuine desire to serve others.

"Alan will be missed for his many historical CC recollections and his willingness to fulfill any task requested of him," said Fr. Patrick Fulton, CSB. "We are grateful for the many generations of Shamrocks he has served."

A native of Michigan, Mr. Barker earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Northern Michigan University, where he met his wife, Melanie. He later earned a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Eastern Michigan University. Before becoming a counselor, Alan taught chemistry at Catholic Central, sharing his passion for science with students for many years. In 2011, he was recognized as the Metropolitan Detroit Science Fair Teacher of the Year by the Engineering Society of Detroit, a testament to his excellence in the classroom and his commitment to student achievement.

His years as both a classroom teacher and counselor gave him a unique perspective as an educator. Students appreciated his practical advice, steady presence, and ability to understand the challenges they faced. Parents valued his thoughtful guidance, and faculty members respected his experience and commitment to Catholic Central's mission.

Alan was just one year shy of retirement, a reflection of the pride he took in his work and the deep commitment he felt to the students and families he served. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he will be remembered for the relationships he built throughout his years at the school. He was a familiar and reassuring presence for students, alumni, parents, and colleagues alike. Many will also remember his quick wit, warm sense of humor, and the dad jokes that brought smiles to those around him.

We extend our deepest condolences to Alan's wife, Melanie, and their children, Hadley and Reece, as well as all of his family and loved ones.
