Catholic Central Holds Spring Sports Assembly, Announces Whelan Award Winner

On Wednesday, April 17, 2024, Detroit Catholic Central High School held its annual Spring Sports Assembly in honor of the current season.

During the assembly, players and coaches from various Spring sports spoke to students about their goals for the year. Sports recognized during the assembly included baseball, golf, lacrosse, rugby, esports, and track and field.

David Kibbey ‘24 also announced that a memorial bench in honor of Stephen Sylvester ‘24 would be unveiled at this year’s Baccalaureate Mass on May 18. Donations collected for the Spirit Day went towards the funding of the bench.

Also, during the assembly, Athletic Director Aaron Babicz ’93 announced Joe Curtin ‘24 as this year’s Whelan Award winner. The Whelan Award is the highest honor given to a scholar athlete at Catholic Central. It is given out each year to a senior who has excelled academically, is looked upon by his peers as a Christian gentleman and is an outstanding athlete. The winner is elected by all varsity letter winners among the student body.

Curtin is a four-year multi-sport athlete. As team captain for both the varsity lacrosse and hockey teams, he has earned All Catholic and All State recognition, and multiple State Championships.

Additionally, he holds a 3.3 GPA in the classroom. Curtin will be featured in several stories later this spring, along with the winners of the Dillon and Ranalletti Awards, the other two of the “Big Three” awards recognizing members of the graduating class.
