On Wednesday, December 6, 2023, the defending Division 1 Champions, the Catholic Central High School Shamrocks, hosted and beat the 10X defending Division 2 Champions, the Lowell Red Arrows, in an annual wrestling match assembly, with a score of 33-21. The match was livestreamed by Catholic Central’s media club and featured on the school’s YouTube channel.
"Our guys competed hard and did a fantastic job of finding ways to persevere through challenging match situations versus one of the elite teams in the state and country. I'm thankful to Coach Boudro and the Lowell wrestling program for making the trip and competing in a very challenging environment. I have a great amount of respect for the Red Arrow program,” stated Head Wrestling Coach, Mitch Hancock.
The Varsity A Blue team wrestled first, followed by the Varsity White B team. The entire Catholic Central student body and faculty were present to cheer on their team loudly with boom sticks. The assembly match started at 1:48 PM and lasted approximately one hour. There were 14 weight classes and matches total.
Every year, one local team travels to Catholic Central to perform in the assembly match, a tradition that boasts an impressive history, dating back over 50 years when Coach Mike Rodriquez started them in the 1960s. Catholic Central played against Hartland last year in 2022, securing a 47-15 victory.
“What an event and an opportunity to showcase the great sport of wrestling and honor Coach Rodriguez, who was the pioneer in starting an assembly match back in 1967. I'm proud of the Shamrock Nation for creating a unique and exciting platform for our wrestlers to display their hard work and talents,” Coach Hancock stated.
