Business Students Go Behind the Scenes with Detroit Tigers Analytics Team

Real-world learning at Comerica Park connects classroom concepts to careers in sports analytics

What happens when classroom lessons in business and data analytics meet the real world of professional sports? For 50 Detroit Catholic Central High School students, the answer came to life during a memorable day at Comerica Park on Friday, May 9, 2025.

Led by Business Department Head Amanda Loffler, the group took part in an exclusive behind-the-scenes experience with the Detroit Tigers’ Business Analytics Team. The visit included a panel discussion where students heard directly from professionals working in one of the most exciting, fast-paced sectors of the sports industry.

“What an incredible day of learning outside the classroom,” said Loffler. “Our students engaged with members of the Tigers’ analytics team and learned how these professionals built their careers, from internships and college paths to the day-to-day challenges they face in their roles.”

The panelists shared how data plays a critical role in shaping decisions in player development, marketing, operations, and fan engagement. For students studying business, statistics, or interested in sports management, the visit offered a firsthand look at the intersection of data and decision-making in a high-stakes environment.

“Opportunities like this help our students connect what they’re learning in school to real-world applications,” Loffler added. “Hearing these stories gave them insight into the future possibilities in data science, business, and sports management—and how their skills could one day make an impact in those fields.”

The experience was made possible thanks to the generosity of Catholic Central alumnus Joe Schiavi ’04 and the Tigers' front office, who welcomed the Shamrocks with enthusiasm and encouragement.

“We are so grateful to Joe and the Detroit Tigers organization for inspiring the next generation of analysts, strategists, and leaders,” said Loffler.
