Catholic Central is proud to announce that Jose Villarreal ’06 has opened VillaNorte Cocina Mexicana restaurant in Northville, Michigan. We caught up with Jose to hear about his journey since graduating from Catholic Central and his experience as a businessman and restaurant owner.

Reflecting on his time at CC, Villarreal says, “My favorite memories will always be the bonds built through Catholic Central, the camaraderie at sporting events, and the way we supported each other through both good and difficult times.”

During his years at Catholic Central, he was involved in wrestling and football, and he also took on leadership roles as a member of the Brothers’ Club and president of the French Club. As he puts it, “The friendships and sense of brotherhood I found there have stayed with me ever since.”

“Catholic Central shaped more than just my education; it shaped how I view community and leadership,” he explains. “The administrators, faculty, and staff genuinely cared about our success in sports, academics, and life.” Seeing that example firsthand left a lasting impression. “That example of mentorship made me want to one day be in a position to influence others, to help people see things differently, pursue excellence, and work with heart.”

After graduating from Catholic Central, Villarreal continued his education at St. Edward’s University, where he earned a degree in Accounting in 2013. However, his path soon shifted. “I soon realized that working behind a desk wasn’t for me,” he says. “I had worked in kitchens all through college and knew that’s where I belonged.”

That realization led him into the restaurant industry, where he helped open several restaurants in Austin, Texas, before returning to Michigan. “Locally, I helped open Lucy and the Wolf in Northville in 2016 and was part of Flowers of Vietnam in Detroit from its pop-up beginnings to its grand opening,” Villarreal shares.

Today, he is one of the driving forces behind VillaNorte Cocina Mexicana, a project that holds deep personal meaning. “I’ve had the privilege of helping open several restaurants over the years, but VillaNorte was different because it came from family,” he explains. “The inspiration was a lifelong dream to create something of our own.”

VillaNorte reflects both heritage and intention. “VillaNorte is rooted in the family recipes and traditions of northern Mexico, where our essence truly lies,” Villarreal says. “You can feel the warmth of the fire in our grilled dishes and taste the gentle kiss of pepper and soul in every bite.” He adds, “Our food comes from the ground and our family. We are a scratch kitchen, making everything fresh in-house with care and intention.”

Looking ahead, Villarreal remains focused on growth, both personally and professionally. “Looking ahead, my goals are to continue growing as a person, a leader, and a coworker,” he says. “I want to keep working hard to grow VillaNorte for the good of our community and my family.”

When asked what advice he would give current Catholic Central students, Villarreal offers a thoughtful reminder to live fully and intentionally. “We’re given one life, so make it count. Be curious. Ask questions. Take risks. Learn a new language. Share a smile. Read a book. Explore a nearby small town. Do it alone, with a friend, or with someone you love.”

He concludes with words that reflect both perspective and purpose. “Just remember not to forget to stop and smell the roses along the way. Most importantly, be the person you needed when you were younger.”
