Academic Team wins 12th Consecutive NAQT State Championship

On Saturday, April 15, the varsity academic team competed in the 2023 NAQT State Championship Tournament at the University of Michigan, securing their 12th consecutive state championship.

The varsity A team—captain Will Carstens '23, Dominic Apap '24, Jacob Barta '25, Nick Murray 25, and Ben Yancey '25—swept the field with a perfect 10-0 record. The team defeated Troy High School in an intense back-and-forth final 375-290 that saw Will Carstens clinch the win on the 19th of 20 questions.

Senior Will Carstens was named First Team All-State and was the tournament’s overall top scorer. Additionally, sophomore Jacob Barta was named Second Team All-State. 

The team now heads to the national championship to defend their 2022 national title.

Then, on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, students heard from Lt. Col. Karl Vogelheim ‘85 of the Michigan Air National Guard about his career in aviation.
