On Tuesday, January 30, students with notable achievements from this year’s Academic and Robotics Teams were honored during a school-wide Academic Teams Assembly.
The assembly took place in the main gym and was attended by all classes. Students heard from several coaches and teachers, including Mr. Ben Herman of the Academic Team, Mr. Joe Lemieux of the Robotics Team, and Mr. Russell Facione.
Students with notable achievements were called out by name and asked to stand up as the rest of the student body applauded. Academic and Robotics Team coaches spent several minutes explaining their respective clubs to prospective students who might be interested in joining and highlighted notable upcoming competitions for their current teams.
The Academic Team at CC is a competitive program open to all grades. Students in this club compete in several categories, including Fine Arts, Literature, Science, Geography, Current Events, History, and Math. The team competes at freshman, JV, and varsity levels throughout the stage and out of state in nationally recognized tournaments.
Meanwhile, the Robotics Team is a group of students from all grade levels who work together to build and design a robot that will be entered into the international FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). The season is from January 1 to April 30.
Students in this program learn STEM and business management skills and concepts. They don’t need to know anything about robotics before joining and can progress throughout various levels on the team throughout the season. The 2024 Robotics team will be moved into the new Robotics Center in the George and Mary Turek Hall of Science where they plan to develop a world-class competitive robot.
Recognition was also given to the DECA club and its moderator, Mrs. Amanda Loffler. For more information about Catholic Central’s Academic, DECA, and Robotics Teams, please visit the student organization page.
