On Saturday, October 26, 2024, sophomore Jonathon Creen ‘27 partnered with Nurse Laura Helm to host a National Prescription Drug Take Back Day for the community to safely dispose of unused medications.
“Participating in National Prescription Medicine Take Back Day for the second year has been an incredible experience, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the outstanding support of our community partners. My deepest thanks go to Catholic Central, Novi Police Department, and the South Lyon Community Coalition for their unwavering support and steadfast dedication to raising awareness about the dangers of drug misuse and addiction. Their involvement has been vital in spreading awareness and promoting responsible medication disposal,” stated Jonathon.
“It is really important that we dispose of medications properly to decrease the risk of accidental overdose, prevent misuse of medications, and work to keep our environment and drinking water safe,” stated Nurse Helm.
Approximately eight pounds of medication were collected and safely disposed of. Medications included a mix of narcotics, chemotherapy pills, old antibiotics, allergy medications, and dozens more various types of medications.
“A majority of our medications came from our own CC community. I would guess we had about 20 drop offs in total,” stated Nurse Helm.
“Together, we are making a meaningful difference by helping to prevent substance misuse and ensuring unused medications are safely disposed of. I look forward to continuing this meaningful work with their help in the future,” Creen continued.
