450 Students Recognized for Academic Excellence

On Thursday, May 11, 2023, Detroit Catholic Central recognized the academic excellence of over 450 students at the annual Academic Awards Banquet. The following awards were presented to students who have achieved particular distinction:

  • RENSSELAER MEDAL - Oliver Kammeraad ’24
    Awarded to a promising junior who has distinguished himself in both mathematics and science. The medal was first presented in 1916 with two purposes: to recognize the superlative academic achievement of young men and women, and to motivate students toward careers in science, engineering, and technology. The merit scholarship has a total minimum value of $120,000 over four years, upon enrolling at Rensselaer.

  • EDWARD SIWIK ‘80 RESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP - Joseph Stopczynski ‘23
    The Edward Siwik Residential Scholarship in remembrance of Edward Siwik, Catholic Central class of 1980 and a student at the University of Michigan. Applicants must be accepted to and plan to attend the Ann Arbor campus of the University of Michigan.

  • HARVARD BOOK SCHOLARSHIP - Oliver Kammeraad ‘24
    Harvard Prize Books are awarded to outstanding students in the next-to-graduating high school class who display excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields.

  • DECA EMERGING LEADER HONOR AWARD - Nicholas Ventura '23
    DECA’s Emerging Leader Honor Award recognizes members studying marketing, finance, hospitality and management for being academically prepared, community oriented, professionally responsible, experienced leaders through participation in DECA.

  • Appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point

    • Spencer Lyons ‘23 (West Point Prep School)

    • Blaise Williams ‘23 

Students were also recognized for departmental awards, various honor roles, and exceptional achievements, as follows: 

  • Academic Achievement Department Award - Students recognized by their teachers who have excelled in a particular class (science, math, etc.)

  • Shamrock Yearbook Award - Students recognized for exceptional work as a member of the yearbook staff

  • Spectrum Newspaper Award - Students recognized for outstanding work as a member of the newspaper staff

  • Gabriel Richard Club (1st Semester 2021/2022) - Students who achieved Gabriel Richard status for the 1st Semester of the current year

  • National Merit Award - Students who achieved Commended or Semifinalists status based on SAT scores

  • Class Officer - Students who are class officers

  • Student Council Officer - Students who are student council officers

Robotics Selected for Indiana Robotics Invitational

The Indiana Robotics Invitational s a prestigious invitation only competition where the best teams from around the world are invited to compete over the summer on the 2023 Charged Up! competition. The Shambots made the cut of a select invite list out of over 100 team applications. Part of the team will travel to Lafayette, IN July 6-8 to compete.

Academic Team Places 8th in Nation

Varsity Academic Team competed against 304 schools in Atlanta, GA at the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament May 26 and May 27. The Varsity A team finished the preliminary games with a 7-3 record and qualified for the double-elimination playoffs. After losing in the opening round in the playoffs, the team rallied to win five consecutive games, including a win over #6 ranked Kinkaid (TX) to take 8th in the country. The team consisted of senior captain Will Carstens, who was named one of the tournament all-stars, and sophomores Nick Murray, Jacob Barta, and Ben Yancey.
