Teacher Spotlight: Erin Sharkey

Catholic Central Mathematics Department Head Erin Sharkey took a unique journey to finding her career in teaching. Beginning her career as an active-duty Army officer, Mrs. Sharkey joined the military for the opportunity to travel the world. By her last year in the military, however, Mrs. Sharkey’s desire to pursue teaching had become clear.

“I have always been passionate about education, and teaching seemed like a fun job,” said Mrs. Sharkey. “My dad was also a math teacher, so I followed in his footsteps.”

Going back to school at night, Mrs. Sharkey earned a teaching certification from St. Martin’s College at Fort Lewis, Washington.

Fast forward a few years, Mrs. Sharkey and her family were looking to make a move to Michigan when an opening arose in the mathematics department at Catholic Central. Mrs. Sharkey’s mother-in-law was the student activities director at the time, and she reached out to Mrs. Sharkey to coordinate an interview.

Now in her 12th year at Catholic Central, Mrs. Sharkey is grateful that her familial ties led her to where she is today, calling Catholic Central home.

“The best part of teaching is working with the students,” said Mrs. Sharkey. “They make me laugh every single day. I love helping students understand easy and difficult concepts. It is very rewarding when they return from college and let me know how well their college calculus classes are going.”

Catholic Central Senior John Smith says Mrs. Sharkey is one of the most compassionate teachers he has ever met.

“Her straightforward, down-to-earth teaching style helps me understand even the hardest calculus concepts,” said Smith. “If my classmates and I are struggling, she always makes time before and after school to help us. I feel lucky to have had Mrs. Sharkey for two years of math at Catholic Central.”

Mrs. Sharkey currently teaches Honors Geometry/Trigonometry, Calculus, and Calculus AB. Next time you see Mrs. Sharkey, be sure to thank her for her service to our country, and maybe strike up a conversation on one of the interesting facts below.

Favorite band/artist/musician: “One of my favorite bands is The Black Keys. The last concert I saw we ended up in the front row at Little Caesars Arena. It was a great way to see a concert!”

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? “I have three sons that keep me active. Two are students at CC, and the third will be here in a few years.”
