Academic Team Wins Big at Hicksville Invitational

On Saturday, November 20th, the Catholic Central varsity and junior varsity academic teams competed in Hicksville, Ohio at the Hicksville Invitational Tournament. Sending six total teams to the tournament, four varsity and two junior varsity, 25 players under the direction of Coaches Christopher Gismondi ’00 and Benjamin Herman ’98 represented Catholic Central.

In the junior varsity tournament, the F and E teams both went undefeated. In the finals, the F team defeated the E team 200-145 to win the championship.

In the varsity tournament, the A team swept the field with a perfect 8-0 record, including defeating Carmel High School’s A team in the finals 570-170. Both the B and C teams qualified for nationals. The A team improves its overall record to 53-2 on the year.

“Our varsity A team defeated two very talented teams from Indiana by large margins and in convincing fashion that surprised even me in the semi-finals and finals,” said Coach Gismondi.

With the academic team’s season running the length of the school year, the team’s trajectory proves promising. The team currently ranks #2 in the country, holding wins over the #3, #8, #11, and #18 ranked teams.

Senior captain Drew Laroo played an impressive tournament, finishing as the fourth overall scorer out of 117 competitors.

“This is the fourth tournament our varsity A team has won, out of the five we've competed in, and it just keeps up the momentum we're trying to build heading into the second semester,” Coach Gismondi said.

The A team next competes at the University of Pennsylvania on December 4th.
