Meet Catholic Central’s 2021 National Merit Semifinalists!
Twenty-five Shamrock scholars were recognized as National Merit Scholars and/or College Board National Hispanic Scholars this year! Our two National Merit Semifinalists are Declan Lee ’22, from Northville and Our Lady of Victory Middle School, and Cole Nogawa ’22, from Commerce Township and the Academy of the Sacred Heart Middle School.
Cole and Declan sat down to answer some questions about their experience!
What are some of the things you are involved with at Catholic Central?
Lee: Band Council, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Co-President of Drama Club, Kairos Rector, Praise Band, Academic Team
Nogawa: Class Treasurer, Science Olympiad Head Coach, Spectrum Editor-in-chief, Varsity Tennis, Jazz Band, HOSA
What are some of the things you are involved with off campus?
Lee: Mercy Theater, Camp Sweeney (Counselor in Training and Camper)
Nogawa: Senior in the Japanese School of Detroit
What made you decide to attend CC for high school? What is your favorite thing about CC?
Lee: I picked CC because I grew up as a Shamrock. A lot of my family members have attended. I love all the people here and the school spirit we foster. It creates an energetic environment that promotes growth.
Nogawa: Seeing students interact on my Shadow Day made me decide to attend CC for high school. My favorite thing about CC is the sense of community and brotherhood that the school’s teaching philosophy and structure imbue students with.
How has CC challenged you to grow during your time here?
Lee: CC has forced me to grow through tons of challenging classes, and I’ve also joined clubs and activities I never thought I would.
Nogawa: CC has challenged me to grow as a whole person by encouraging me to take on responsibilities and become a contributing member of the community.
What are your plans after Catholic Central?
Lee: I’m not sure where I want to go to college, but I want to study psychology, and continue to act and play the trombone.
Nogawa: I plan to attend a Midwest or East coast university, majoring in psychology while fulfilling pre-med requirements and continuing my Japanese studies.
We hope you enjoyed learning a bit more about Declan and Cole! You can also see the responses from our National Merit Commended Students here, and our College Board National Hispanic Scholars here.
