Catholic Central continues to move forward with a purposeful effort to increase diversity and access. To further the efforts of growing diversity and ensuring that Catholic Central is a welcoming community for families of all backgrounds, Kevin Glenn has transitioned into a new role outside of the Admissions Office as Director of Community Engagement and Diversity, and Tony Jones
has taken over his role in the Admissions Office.
Kevin joined the Admissions Office
in January of 2020, and was quickly thrust into a unique situation as COVID forced the Admissions Office to adapt all of its processes. Working closely with Jake Marmul ’07, the Director of Admissions and Public Relations, and David Sofran, Admissions Enrollment Manager, Kevin and the team were still able to see success with the incoming students in the Class of 2025.
“When we talk about diversity in our student body, there are a few identifiers we look at: religious, socioeconomic, geographic, and racial,” said Kevin. “CC has always been strong in the first three (religious, socioeconomic, and geographic) but in the last three years we have been really happy to see a significant increase in the racial diversity of our incoming students. This is a direct result of the effort we are putting in as an institution.”
Kevin’s new position places him in more direct contact with donors and alumni, as well.
“We were very happy with Kevin’s work in the Admissions Office, and we wanted to build on that success,” said Ed Turek ’85, President of Catholic Central. “Kevin’s new role will allow him to spend more time with high level partnership building outside of the school, as well as focus on the immediate experience of the families currently in the building.”
One of the first things Kevin was able to do was establish a Diversity Task Force made up of key faculty and staff members who represent all aspects of the community - academics, administration, admissions, alumni, athletics, the business office, campus ministry, parent groups, and student activities. The goal is to review the full Catholic Central experience and identify action steps that we can take to be as welcoming as possible to families from diverse backgrounds.
“It’s important to understand that we aren’t looking to change who we are as a school,” said Kevin. “However, there are things that we can do to make families more comfortable while still reaching the same end goal for all of our students.”
A recurring theme has been that this initiative doesn’t have a “finish line” of sorts.
“One of the main goals of Basilian education is to create an environment in which every young man who is willing to work can be successful,” said Fr. Fulton, Principal. “For us at Catholic Central that means that we need to review everything from the admissions process, the cost of tuition, transportation, educational and emotional support, and in some extreme cases even base level items such as food and clothing. While we’ve been able to see some quick success, it is important to understand that this is not a quick-fix effort. We are in this for the long haul.”
“As an institution, we recognize that there will always be areas we can improve, and this committee is a way for us to actively and continually search for those blind spots,” said Ed Turek. “Once we know what we need to fix, then we can attack it.”
Catholic Central has also partnered with The Simmons Advantage
, a group that works with schools and organizations around the country in efforts to provide training and in-depth reviews of diversity initiatives.
"One of the first things we did was observe and review the overall school operations and classroom culture at Catholic Central," said Kwame Simmons, founder of The Simmons Advantage. "We quickly learned through our study that students feel connected to the adults at CC, because staff communicate their belief in all students being capable of achieving the most challenging work. The impact of this belief is evident in the relationships students said they have with staff, as well as the staggering 87% of students that choose to participate in voluntary after-school activities."
While Kevin knows that this is a tremendous undertaking, he is encouraged by the fact that there are a large number of people involved. He has also been able to engage with numerous alumni who are very excited about the initiative.
“This can’t just all be on me,” said Kevin, “and it’s been made clear from the President’s Office all the way to the teachers and staff that there is a whole team working towards this goal. We’ve had alumni from more than 3 different decades reach out to get involved in mentor programs or fundraising, and we are just getting started.”
