CC Senior Scholar: Jack Smith '21

Jack Smith ‘21 was named the winner of the Michigan 2021 American Legion Oratorical Contest on March 6th in Lansing, earning a prize of $8,000.

Smith delivered a ten minute speech entitled, Popular Sovereignty: The People’s Government. He considered the historical roots of protests and voting as an expression of the will of the American people. Additionally, he prepared four five minutes speeches about the three branches and the Constitution.  Students from across the state competed at local, zone, and state levels in the contest. Jack’s final presentation placed him against students from Greenhills, Grosse Pointe, and Big Rapids.

The American Legion Oratorical Contest has presented participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship since 1938.

Congratulations to Jack on this achievement!
