“The magic is in believing. 48 Minutes for a lifetime.” Every shamrock who played for Hall of Fame Coach Tom Mach has heard these words just before heading into a big game. To the shamrocks who have strapped on the interlocking C’s knows that these are more than words, it is a mindset.
On Friday, October 11, Detroit Catholic Central honored the 1979 and 2009 state championship teams, Mach’s first and last, during halftime of the varsity football game against Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. These teams embodied this mindset.
The 1979 team preseason number one in the state and went 12-0 and defeated Escanaba 32-7 in the 1979 MHSAA Class A state championship game and ended the season being ranked 8th in the nation.
The 2009 team went 14-0 and defeated Sterling Heights Stevenson 31-21 in the 2009 MHSAA Division 1 state championship.
The football team did their part with a great come from behind 20-14 victory over Orchard Lake St. Mary’s to capture the 2019 Detroit Catholic League Central Division Title.
We would like to thank Coach Mach, the players and their families for coming out on Friday Night and showing yet again, why every day is a great day to be a Shamrock!
