The 31st Annual Alumni Association and All Classes Reunion

On Thursday, May 2nd, the Alumni Association held their 31st Annual Alumni dinner at Laurel Manor in Livonia Michigan. The dinner honored Mr. Robert E. Barnes, Sr. ‘56 and the Honorable Robert J. Colombo, Jr. ‘68 with the Fr. Canning F. Harrison, C.S.B. Distinguished Alumnus Award. This award is in memory of Fr. Harrison’s tireless work as Director of the Alumni Association (1973-1987).  It is awarded to those alumni and Basilian Fathers who have exemplified the philosophy and mission of Detroit Catholic Central High School.

Mr. Robert Barnes ‘56 was a member of the Student Council and Sarcristan Club while a student at Catholic Central. In addition to the over 30 family members that have graduated Catholic Central, Bob is a founding member of the Catholic Central Alumni Association Board, and most notably a major force during the planning and execution of Catholic Central’s move to our current Novi location. In his acceptance speech, Mr. Barnes spoke on the importance of the Alumni Board: “The alumni association was formed to act as an advisory board, to assist the priests and faculty in any way requested. The makeup of the board has changed through the years, but each member has had a heartfelt love and devotion to Catholic Central.”

The Honorable Robert J. Colombo, Jr. ‘68 served the State of Michigan for 36 years as a judge and chief judge of the Wayne County Circuit Court. During that time, he hosted a number of Catholic Central students at our Annual Law Day and sits on the School Board at Detroit Cristo Rey. Judge Colombo remarked about the impact Catholic Central has made on his career. “Catholic Central set me up to be a success. It is the finest educational institution that I have attended in my life. Catholic Central gave me the confidence to believe that I could be more than I ever could be. It was a wonderful experience and I thank you for everything you gave me.”
