The varsity lacrosse team faced-off against St. Michael’s College School in the ninth annual Basil Bowl on Saturday, April 13, 2019. Catholic Central came away with a 14-9 victory and held onto the “GDK Stick” trophy for another year.
The Basil Bowl is a rivalry between the North American schools sponsored by the Basilian Fathers. The lacrosse team was the first at Catholic Central to begin the tradition of playing St. Michael’s College School on an annual basis. The teams have met for nearly a decade and Catholic Central leads the all-time series 5-4.
We caught up with varsity head coach Dave Wilson ‘88 to gain his insights into the history and significance of the rivalry: “We began playing St. Michael’s College School nine years ago to seek greater competition. Not only do we get to mingle with our Canadian brothers that share in some of the same great Basilian traditions as we do, but we are always offered a great contest.”
Wilson also pointed out how the Basil Bowl offers our student-athletes an international experience by visiting one of North America’s largest cities. “Toronto offers a rich history, great food, and tourism for our students and families. When you combine these things, one can see how enriching our time with St Michael’s College School really is.”
In addition to the Basil Bowl on Saturday, the varsity lacrosse team played Upper Canada College on Friday night on the campus of Trinity College in downtown Toronto. The varsity team came away with a 15-2 victory.
The junior varsity team also made the trip to Toronto and split the two games. Winning 17-4 on Friday night against Upper Canada College and falling short 7-6 against St. Michael’s on Saturday.
We look forward to hosting our Basilian Brothers next spring!
