Student Organizations

Detroit Catholic Central is a school where students flourish both inside and outside of the classroom.

In order to experience all that CC has to offer, students participate in several extracurricular activities, including athletics, clubs, intramurals, and student government. This is where many of the long-lasting friendships and bonds of brotherhood are cultivated. Currently Catholic Central features more than 35 clubs and activities that range from outdoor experiences like archery and backpacking to robotics, drama, band/orchestra, and media/broadcast news.

An estimated 90% of students participate in at least one extracurricular activity.

Our intramural sports alone have more than 250 participants each year. Student Activities, which includes the student council and class officers, consists of almost 100 students who take leadership roles with dances, assemblies, fundraisers, and other spirit activities.

Academic Team

A competitive program that is open to all grade levels. Competition is based on a team's mastery of specific academic categories including Literature, Fine Arts, Science, Geography, History, Current Events, and Mathematics. The Catholic Central Academic Team competes at the Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshman levels. All three teams compete throughout the state and travel out-of-state to nationally recognized tournaments. The Catholic Central Academic Team is a fierce competitor in the State of Michigan and is recognized as one of the most competitive programs in the nation.

Archery Club

The Archery Club is driven by student leadership and is open to beginners as well as experienced archers. All equipment is provided. We use Genesis compound bows as approved by the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). The club meets after school once a week during the months of September and October, and lessons are given at the beginning of each meeting.

B.A.S.E. (Black Awareness Society for Education)

Mission Statement: At BASE, our mission is to promote unity, racial understanding, and enrichment for all students at Detroit Catholic Central. We aim to uplift our community through education, brotherhood, and service while celebrating the diversity that makes us stronger.

Goals:
• Create Unity: Build strong bonds among students of all backgrounds through meaningful discussions, activities, and events.
• Foster Leadership: Empower young men to be leaders in both our school and the broader Detroit community.
• Service-Oriented: Participate in community service projects that make a difference both inside and outside of school.
• Cultural Awareness: Highlight the contributions of Black culture and history to enrich the school environment.

Objectives:
1. Engagement & Community Service: Host monthly service projects in the Detroit area that unite students around shared goals.
2. Social Media Initiatives: Stay connected through our BASE Instagram, where members can share events, achievements, and resources.
3. Exclusive Giveaways: Members will have chances to win concert tickets, football game tickets, sneaker raffles, and exclusive BASE apparel.
4. Monthly Speakers: Bring in inspiring leaders from the Detroit community, including athletes, entrepreneurs, and social activists, to talk about success, leadership, and giving back.

Chess Club meets once a week in Mr. Cornish's room. There are many opportunities to play chess casually or competitively. If you are interested in improving your game, we can work with you to do this, but it’s completely fine to come and just grab a quick game with a friend. All levels of ability are welcome.

This competitive speech club offers students an opportunity to participate in the Detroit Catholic Forensics League. In the fall, we participate in Lincoln Douglas Debate, and in the Winter/Spring, we participate in Forensics Individual Events, which includes dramatic interpretation, prose, poetry, or duo categories.

Fishing Club

The Detroit Catholic Central Fishing Club meets bi-weekly and helps to develop a conservation ethic and an enhanced understanding of our natural environment and ecology through recreational and competitive fishing. The Club will develop a forum to introduce and improve education of general fishing knowledge, tactics, techniques, ecology, and angler/boater safety concepts related to fishing. The Club will serve as a means for community outreach/service as well.

The Flying Shamrocks will meet monthly to talk about careers in the fields of Aviation and Aerospace. We will have speakers come in that work in those areas to share their expertise, take field trips to different local airports and businesses in the fields of Aviation and aerospace, and in general, just nerd out about our favorite things together. This club is a stepping stone to introduce the new Aviation program that will begin at Catholic Central in 2024-2025, and the Aerospace field that will be focused on with the new STEM resources in the George and Mary Turek Hall of Science.

Latin Club is a club dedicated to getting students who take Latin to get together socially. Sometimes we do things associated with ancient Rome, but many times, we just do an activity that gets students together who all have something in common. The club is casual, attendance is not required, and students are encouraged to come up with activities for us to all do together. Museum trips, Latin mass, Piston's games, haunted houses, and many more things have been things we have done in the past. We are always looking for something new to add to the list.

Model United Nations

Model United Nations is an activity that simulates a United Nations general assembly. It consists of speeches, debates, unmoderated caucus, moderated caucuses, and voting. It has teams from different schools, assigns topics of discussion for each simulation, and assigns each team their own country. Each team will have to do research on their assigned countries' views on the topic and write short speeches and resolutions to the problems. The team must form block “alliances” with other countries to form one resolution that benefits everyone in that block.

The outdoor club will begin meeting in the second semester to prepare for a weekend trip that is held in May or June. Students may bring their own gear or use gear provided by the school. The weekend backpacking trip will go to a Michigan destination where we will typically canoe on the first day and camp overnight. The next day, we hike about ten miles with gear and camp overnight. On the third day, we hike out and return to school.

Who Are We: We are a pro-life club at Detroit Catholic Central High School to help educate our young men on abortion, the pro-life movement, and ways we can protect the unborn and mothers. We have weekly meetings, plan activities, fundraise, and find ways to be pro-active in the pro-life movement. All grades are welcome!

Mission Statement: We dedicate ourselves to the unborn and sanctity of all life from conception to natural death.

Some things that we do:

· Fundraise and volunteer at crisis pregnancy centers

· Help assemble birth kits to send overseas

· Have diaper drives at school

· Attend pro-life conferences

· Participate in the March for Life every January

· Bring awareness to the school and local communities

· Pray for the unborn

Shamrock News and Media Team

CC Shamrock News and Media Team is the place for all things news and media related around the school!

The Shamrock News Team produces the school news program that is aired during homeroom on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. There are roles available in front of the camera (anchors and reporters) as well as behind the scenes (cameramen, producers, writers, editors, and switchers). The CC Shamrock news is produced after school on Fridays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. It is a great opportunity to be involved in the school and learn about news programming, producing, and media arts!

The CC Media Team produces livestreams on the CC YouTube channel at sporting events as well as provides media support for school events and assemblies, including those for DRIVE and Boys’ Bowl. Similar to the news team, there are roles available in front of the camera (play-by-play and color commentators and reporters) as well as behind the scenes (cameramen, equipment managers, OBS stream operators, writers, graphic designers, and photographers). The Media Team has a weekly meeting after school on Wednesdays, and members also work at sporting events after school or in the evenings. This is a great way to gain practical, real-life experience in media arts and broadcasting!

Shamrock STEM Ambassador Corps

The Shamrock STEM Ambassador Corps meets one Saturday per month for 2-3 hours, focusing on different fields of STEM each meeting. The goal of the Shamrock STEM Ambassador Corps is to educate the members, perform community outreach at local elementary & middle schools about STEM, and to help raise awareness of STEM fields. STEM Career professionals will come in and present about their chosen field, then the Corps will learn an outreach activity pertaining to that session’s focus area, and finally, the Corps members will go out into the community to engage local elementary & middle school students in hands-on STEM activities. Students that develop competency in these areas will be able to earn Community Service hours while performing the Corps Outreach.

Spanish Club & Spanish Honor Society

The Detroit Catholic Central Spanish Club is an active group with over 100 students participating throughout the year. We hold various cultural events and participate in community service projects. All Spanish students in all grades are welcome to join. Spanish Club events include Spanish Bingo/Loteria, Tacos and Trivia, Bubble Soccer, Mission Drives for Compassion International, Community Service at Academy of the Americas, Spanish Spelling Bee, Dodgeball against the French Club, Spanish culture field trips, and much more! Students have the opportunity to learn more about the Spanish speaking culture, practice their language skills, and have fun with their CC brothers. We also offer membership into the Spanish Honor Society, which is based on teacher recommendation and academics in Spanish courses. The Spanish Club also has many students attend our travel abroad trips to Spain and Peru.

Detroit Catholic Central's Spectrum was first published by students in 1936 and has remained an important component of school tradition ever since. Today, Spectrum is published in print four times per year.

Whether they are assigned to report on school news and sports, to express their opinions in editorials, or to interview subjects and write features, Spectrum writers are encouraged to approach their craft with creativity, nuance, and professionalism.

Many Spectrum alumni have used their experience to pursue journalism at their respective colleges—including Miami University (OH), Boston University, Michigan State University, and the University of Michigan—and professionally.
